Spring Lions
What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.” ~Waldo Emerson
I felt for a few brief days last week that Spring was here in Newfoundland. It was a teaser, plain and simple. Rain, drizzle and fog, and cold is what we have now. I manage to harvest some early dandelions on the beach and made some tea and boiled leaves. Beach greens are up too. Also known as sea sandwort. They are really nice boiled then buttered. Getting all the sand off is a bit of a chore. My potatoe seeds are ready to be planted but it’s too bitter outside. We still risk a frost.
There is a constant flurry out back around the suet feeders. Yellow rumped warblers especially. Goldfinches, juncos, pine siskins, crossbeaks, blue jays, whiskey jacks, a couple of starlings and crows all assemble in the yard at various feed stations. I even had a Tennessee warbler trying to keep itself warm with suet. A long way from home. There is a snowshoe hare that has been out back through the winter. It has come up to me to sniff my shoe. They often get comfortable with me. I think she might be pregnant. A grouse visits at dusk each night as well.
I have a few florals left in my studio. If you click the first image it will take you to my website where there are more details.
Please leave the dandelions on your lawns as long as possible. They are the first spring food for bees. They are having a hard enough time these days.
Thank you for being here.
Laurie
